Top Picks: Bunion-Friendly Styles

I chose to test several bunion-friendly shoes and sandals and see how they fare after some wear, and these were my favorites.  Bunions are a common foot problem when the big toe pushes against the other toes, causing the joint at the bae of the toe to become enlarged and misaligned.  If you have bunions then you know how painful wearing the wrong pair of shoes can be.Forefoot strap placement is crucial for bunion sufferers, and we’ve kept that in mind. Wide straps or criss-cross designs in soft leathers, stretchy fabrics and padded interiors ensure maximum comfort. Read on for a list of stylish, non-orthopedic looking footwear that won’t restrict, rub, or irritate your bunion — and that’ll feel good right out of the box.

Naot’s Kayla fit the shape of my feet just right (narrow heels, wide in the bunion area, then taper back in).  The low wedge heel and slim profile gives them a tailored look that pairs well with almost any outfit.

Naot’s Matai is a year-round Mary Jane style with an edge. It has soft leather uppers and a wide toe box.  The simplicity of the style lends itself to equally simple styling – stick with classic pieces and you can’t go wrong. When opting for an all black outfit, the rich suede details add some interest to your outfit.

For all the minimalists out there, we recommend Bliss, an no fuss slip-on wedge from SAS. A stretch fabric upper flexes with the shape of your foot. Since this can be styled dress to casual, I especially love it's versatility, especially when traveling.

If you are more interested sandals consider Embark by SAS.  The adjustable straps provide complete control over the fit and the cushioned insole contours to your foot to provide enhanced comfort. I personally love a sporty sandal that can twist an otherwise girly look.

The Liana is one of Wolky’s top  sellers thanks to its easy fit and three-way adjustability and now available in extra wide fit. I love this with the pop of color pants, but can imagine it with a graphic print sundress as well.

Because of it’s stretch leather upper, Alabama is a total game-changer for feet with bunions. Whether it’s cropped trousers or straight-leg denim, showing off your loafer with a shorter hem is perfection.

Mind you, these are what work for me.  Your bunions may need a different style but round toe boxes, wide straps and soft uppers are the key requirements for bunion friendly footwear.
